Tone and Character
One of the main hallmarks of Danelectro guitars is their distinctive Lipstick pickups, which are responsible for much of the sound historically associated with the brand.
The sound is characterised by a bright, clear response with a pronounced twang, particularly noticeable with clean and lightly overdriven tones.
The two-pickup configuration provides a range of sounds through the three-way selector and independent volume and tone controls.
This guitar is particularly well suited to:
- Rock
- Garage Rock
- Indie
- Blues
- Surf
- Country
- Pop
- Alternative Rock
- Psychedelia
- Jangle
- Studio recording
- Vintage sounds
Beyond its technical specifications, a Danelectro has a distinctive sonic personality that clearly sets it apart from the more conventional configurations found on Fender, Gibson and other brands.
A Guitar with History
Danelectro guitars have become particularly recognisable instruments in the history of rock and have been used over the years by musicians such as Jimmy Page, Pete Townshend, Joe Perry and Mark Knopfler, among many others.
Their particular combination of Lipstick pickups, lightweight construction and bright, well-defined sound has made Danelectro guitars a presence in rock, blues, pop and alternative music.
The connection with Jimmy Page is particularly well known. Page used a Danelectro from the 3021/’59 family, notably associated with Kashmir and other performances in which he used open tunings.
Pete Townshend, for his part, used various Danelectro models during the early years of The Who, while Joe Perry has also spoken about his appreciation for this type of guitar and his collection of Danelectro instruments.
Mark Knopfler has also used Danelectro guitars throughout his career.
Beyond its unmistakable aesthetic, the ’59 is therefore part of a very distinctive tradition in the history of the electric guitar.
Construction and Features
The Danelectro ’59 recreates the aesthetic of the classic Danelectro guitars of the late 1950s, retaining visual and construction elements that have become part of the brand’s identity.
This example features the characteristic slightly asymmetrical headstock of this generation, together with two Lipstick pickups, an adjustable six-saddle bridge and the characteristic aluminium nut.
The six-saddle bridge allows individual intonation adjustment for each string, providing greater adjustment possibilities than the simpler bridges used on some vintage-style Danelectro configurations.
Another interesting feature is the pickup-height adjustment screws accessible from the back of the body, allowing the pickup height to be adjusted to fine-tune response and balance between the different pickup positions.
Why It’s Special
The Danelectro ’59 is an immediately recognisable guitar, both for its distinctive appearance and its sound.
Its combination of lightweight body, double cutaway, two Lipstick pickups, aluminium nut and adjustable bridge gives it a personality very different from that of more conventional electric guitars.
It is an especially interesting option for anyone looking for a guitar with its own distinctive character, whether for playing or studio use.
This particular example also offers several features that make it especially attractive:
- One owner
- Perfect condition
- Dark turquoise blue finish
- Gig bag included
- Classic two-Lipstick pickup configuration
A well-preserved Danelectro can also make an especially appealing addition to a collection of instruments with a strong individual character.
